Are you looking for a Pittsburgh Board Certified Plastic Surgeon?

In most states, including Pennsylvania, any licensed physician may perform cosmetic procedures without being board-certified in plastic surgery. Isn’t that scary? “Board-certified” does not mean that the physician is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS). (click here to find if your surgeon is certified by the ABPS)

Many “cosmetic surgeons” say that they are board certified, but only the American Board of Plastic Surgery has traditionally overseen the training of plastic surgeons.

What makes the difference of being an American Board of Plastic Surgery Certified surgeon?

- The ABPS is the only one of the 24 boards approved by the American Board of Medical Specialties that certifies physicians in plastic surgery of the face and all areas of the body.

- The American Board of Medical Specialties was created to protect patients by regulating the quality of medical education.

- Regulates comprehensive examinations and present certification to those who meet the establish requirements.

To be ABPS board certified, a physician must meet these rigid requirements:

-Graduate from an accredited medical school

-Complete a combination of at least five years of general surgery and plastic surgery residency training

-Pass comprehensive oral and written exams

Tips to identify that your surgeon is NOT an ABPS certified surgeon?

-Usually they do not have privileges at hospitals or state certified facilities.

-They do all their procedures at their offices.

-They do NOT give general anesthesia, just local and sedation for all their procedures.

-They have other certified physicians do admissions to the hospitals when taking care of complications

-Their fees are significantly discounted from the average cost of the procedures.

We strongly recommend that your surgeon is board certified by the ABPS. (click here to find if your surgeon is certified by the ABPS). Your body is a precious temple, and deserve to have a well train and experienced surgeon, performing your procedure.

An additional membership that is relevant is the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). This prestigious society requires a plastic surgeon to be board certified by the ABPS. In addition, it requires to regularly attend continuing medical education courses and to adhere to a strict code of ethics.

To make sure your Pittsburgh plastic surgeon has these outstanding qualifications, look for the ASPS logo! You can verify that Dr. Julio A.
