Losing large amounts of weight can cause your breasts to shrink and sag. Dr. Julio Clavijo-Alvarez can reshape and reposition breasts for patients who have experienced significant weight loss. A breast lift after massive weight loss at ReNova Plastic Surgery in Pittsburgh, PA, can remove excess skin, improve the shape of deflated breasts, and create a fuller and more defined bust line.

A breast lift can eliminate sagging exaggerated by massive weight loss by removing excess tissue.

What Does a Breast Lift Do?

Unlike breast augmentation, a breast lift does not increase the size of the bust. This procedure, repositions tissue higher up to eliminate sagging and removes excess skin to create a more youthful silhouette. A breast lift is particularly helpful for patients who have recently lost significant amounts of weight, which can often exaggerate natural sagging. A breast lift can undo the effects of:

  • Sagging or asymmetrical breasts
  • Downward pointing and drooping nipples
  • Stretched or enlarged areolas
  • Decreased breast volume
  • Chest skin folds

However, like most body contouring procedures, breast lifts are not appropriate for every patient. For the results to last, you must be committed to maintaining a healthy lifestyle and stable weight. Furthermore, medical conditions like diabetes and tobacco products can also interfere with the post-surgical healing process and potentially lead to complications. Dr. Clavijo-Alvarez will ask about your medical history and conduct a comprehensive examination during your initial consultation to determine if a breast lift is right for your cosmetic goals.

What to Expect During Surgery

A breast lift is performed under general anesthesia at our state-of-the-art facility and is typically completed within three and a half hours. Once you are comfortably sedated, Dr. Clavijo-Alvarez will make discreet incisions to minimize scarring, often in the folds underneath the breast or around the areola. Which incision is most appropriate will depend on where the excess skin is located and how much will be removed, as well as the position of your nipples.

Dr. Clavijo-Alvarez specializes in dermal suspension mastopexy which can use excess tissue to increase the fullness of the upper breast. While a lengthier procedure, this technique creates a pleasing contour while minimizing post-surgical complications. Once he has successfully repositioned the breast tissue, tightened, and removed the skin, he will apply the necessary bandages and compression garments to minimize swelling and bruising.

If you are self-conscious about the appearance of your breasts after significant weight loss, you may benefit greatly from a breast lift.

The Recovery Process

Most patients will stay in our surgical facility for a few hours after surgery so our team can monitor you for any complications. Once you are released, you will need to have a friend or family member available to drive you home and stay with you for the first few days to assist you with your recovery.

Our team at ReNova Plastic Surgery will provide you with at-home care instructions to assist you in your recovery, such as:

  • Caring for your incisions
  • Medications
  • Potential signs of infection
  • Minimizing any soreness, bruising, and swelling
  • Follow-up appointments

Patients can typically return to their normal routine within two weeks. Your final results will become evident as swelling fades and incision lines heal over the next few months.
