What is a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck, also referred to as an abdominoplasty, is a cosmetic surgery that removes excess skin and fat from the abdominal wall to achieve a flat and toned abdomen. It can also help patients achieve a tight and beautifully contoured waistline by restoring weakened muscles. This cosmetic procedure should not be considered a solution to weight loss. It is beneficial for patients who have tried other methods, such as diet, exercise, and weight control, but have been unsuccessful in achieving their goals.

About Abdominoplasty

Dr. Julio Clavijo-Alvarez at ReNova Plastic Surgery offers abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck surgery. It involves removing fat and excess skin in the abdomen, and, in many cases, tightening the underlying muscles. Patients should note that this is not a weight loss procedure, and is intended for those who are close to their ideal weight.

Tummy Tuck Procedural Steps

Although each surgery is unique to the individual, there are several basic procedural steps which patients can typically expect. Dr. Clavijo-Alvarez can adapt your procedure to suit your specific needs. We offer both mini and extended tummy tucks.

After your candidacy has been approved, the next step is preparing for the procedure. This will involve lab tests and a review of all the medications you are taking. You may be asked to avoid certain medications, such as herbal supplements, aspirin products, and anti-inflammatories. You will also need to avoid smoking and tobacco products six weeks prior to surgery. Due to the anesthesia involved, you will need to arrange for a loved one to drive you to and from your procedure, and stay with you the first few nights to help with aftercare.

Dr. Clavijo-Alvarez will administer general anesthesia for optimal comfort. The doctor will then make your incisions above the pubic line and naval from hip to hip to remove excess skin and tighten your muscles. If the procedure is performed alone, it will take about two to three hours. Your surgery may take longer if additional procedures, such as liposuction and breast augmentation are included. Dr. Clavijo-Alvarez will then place small tubes to help with fluid retention (drains) and close the incisions with dissolvable sutures. He will then place your bandages and compression garments. Depending on the depth of your procedure, you may need to stay overnight.

Typically, you can expect to return to work within two weeks and full activity in six to eight weeks.

Postoperative Care and Recovery

After surgery, Dr. Clavijo-Alvarez will provide you postoperative care instructions, including wound care, medications to take, and mild stretches to incorporate. You may experience some swelling, bruising, and soreness for the first two weeks. However, cold compresses, pain medications, and compression garments will help relieve discomfort. Typically, you can expect to return to work within two weeks and full activity in six to eight weeks.

Follow-up Appointments and Results

During your first week, Dr. Clavijo-Alvarez will remove the drains and monitor you for any signs infection. Because each patient responds differently to surgery, each recovery will be unique to the patient. Some patients will require more follow-up appointments than others. Although you will see a flatter abdomen almost immediately, final results will not be revealed for about six to eight weeks.
