Transform Your Figure with an Extended Tummy Tuck
For some patients, a standard tummy tuck cannot address all their areas of concern. An extended tummy tuck can remove loose skin and stubborn fat deposits on the abdomen as well as the lateral flanks for more dramatic and comprehensive results. Dr. Julio Clavijo-Alvarez performs extended abdominoplasty procedures at his practice in Pittsburgh, PA. While this procedure does involve a larger incision than other abdominoplasty procedures, Dr. Clavijo-Alvarez can choose a location where the scar can be easily hidden by undergarments or bikini bottoms.
Who is a good candidate for an extended tummy tuck?
Candidates for extended tummy tucks typically wish to address one or more issues, such as:
- Abdominal skin that folds over itself
- Stretch marks on and around the flanks and abdomen
- A bulging appearance on the abdomen due to stretched underlying muscles
- Excess skin around the abdomen and waist
- A sagging or loose pubic area
- Excess skin in the lower abdomen that extends to the sides
- Fat deposits that will not respond to exercise or dieting
Often, this technique is recommended to patients who have achieved substantial weight loss and wish to refine their figures. Dr. Clavijo-Alvarez may also recommend this procedure as part of a mommy makeover for women who wish to enhance their post-pregnancy bodies. You can find out if an extended tummy tuck is right for you during an initial consultation at our office.
What to Expect during your Extended Tummy Tuck?
Extended tummy tuck procedures are typically performed under general anesthesia. Dr. Clavijo-Alvarez will create an incision along the length of the abdomen and around the back of the hips. Then, he will tighten the muscles and adjust the location of the belly button to suit your new shape. Before closing the incision with sutures, he will also trim excess skin from the abdomen, hips, flanks, and back. Dr. Clavijo-Alvarez can combine an extended abdominoplasty with additional treatments, such as liposuction, arm lift, thigh lift, or a Brazilian butt lift for more comprehensive results.
Recovering after an Extended Tummy Tuck
Since this procedure is more involved, patients can expect a longer recovery time than with a standard abdominoplasty. Dr. Clavijo-Alvarez may recommend that you remain in the hospital for at least a day after the surgery to monitor your healing. You will also need someone to help you for a few days after you return home.
If you feel self-conscious about your body due to excess skin and fat, an extended tummy tuck can help you achieve a trimmer, more toned appearance.
Swelling and bruising is normal after a tummy tuck and should subside after about six weeks. Depending on how you feel, Dr. Clavijo-Alvarez may recommend returning to light activity after two weeks. However, you will need to wait longer before resuming any strenuous activities.
