Breast augmentation recovery can require up to a week of downtime, followed by a gradual reintroduction of strenuous physical tasks. Full recovery, including the fading of scars, can take up to a year. Dr. Julio Clavijo-Alvarez in Pittsburgh, PA, provides detailed aftercare instructions to help patients recover safely and comfortably. The duration of the recovery period is dependent upon a variety of factors, including your natural capacity to heal.

Patients with desk jobs can expect to need 3 days to a week away from work. More time may be necessary, if your job is more physically demanding. Please realize that recovery timelines vary among patients.

What to Expect after Surgery

Breast augmentation is performed as an outpatient procedure in our state-certified facility that has been accredited by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities. Immediately after surgery, dressings will be applied and a special support bra will be provided to minimize discomfort and swelling. This compression garment should be worn at all times, except when showering or bathing. A few days after surgery, you will attend a follow-up appointment in which Dr. Clavijo-Alvarez will change your bandages and monitor your incisions for any complications. If any surgical drains were inserted during surgery, these will be removed.

Patient education is important to the success of any surgery. You can depend on Dr. Clavijo-Alvarez to keep you informed at every stage of your breast implant surgery.

Self-Care at Home

Patients will need to take 3 to 7 days off from work. It is suggested to limit any lifting or other strenuous activity for about four to six weeks following breast augmentation surgery. Minimizing strain on your incisions is crucial. If you have young children at home, you will need to have someone on hand to assist you during this time.

Taking your medications as directed can minimize pain and discomfort. We also advise our patients to keep their recovery environment clean and sanitized to limit their risk for infection. This may include changing sheets more regularly and using a fresh towel each time you shower.

Resting with your torso elevated during the first week can allow you to minimize swelling and bruising. We also advise our patients to move any out-of-reach items within arm’s reach to prevent disrupting their incisions. Alcohol consumption should be kept to a minimum.

Common Side Effects

You may experience discomfort and pain, as well as swelling, bruising, soreness, and fatigue after your breast augmentation surgery. If you undergo natural breast augmentation, a process of using grafted fatty tissue to enlarge the breasts, you can expect soreness on your liposuction donor site areas. These side effects are completely normal and will eventually subside. However, it is important to contact our office immediately, if you notice increased pain followed by a fever and skin redness, .
