Eyelid Surgery Q & A

What is eyelid surgery?

Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, helps improve the appearance of both the upper and lower eyelids. Many patients opt for an eyelid procedure to lift sagging or drooping skin. Eyelid surgery can rejuvenate your appearance by making you look more alert.

What cosmetic concerns does eyelid surgery address?

Puffy or sagging eyelids can make you seem older than your years. But eyelid surgery creates a more youthful and awake appearance. Eyelid surgery can help:

  • Lift drooping upper lids
  • Remove undereye bags and puffiness
  • Eliminate fat deposits around the eye
  • Smooth out fine lines beneath the eye

Many patients opt for eyelid surgery alongside other cosmetic treatments. Nonsurgical treatments like BOTOX® or JUVÉDERM® can boost the results of your surgical procedure and keep your eyes looking young.

If you have several cosmetic concerns, Dr. Clavijo-Alvarez can help you develop a treatment strategy that meets all your aesthetic goals.

What happens during an eyelid surgery?

Eyelid surgeries at ReNova take place at a state-certified surgical facility. On the day of your procedure, you meet with Dr. Clavijo-Alvarez. He answers any last-minute questions about your procedure and the recovery process.

Next, you receive anesthesia or sedation. Most patients are placed under general anesthesia, but some patients receive local anesthesia along with a sedative. Dr. Clavijo-Alvarez will let you know which anesthesia you can expect.

Most eyelid surgery procedures take one to three hours. Eyelid surgeries are an outpatient procedure so you can return home the same day. Many patients experience some swelling or bruising for up to two weeks after their procedure. You can generally return to your normal activities within two to three weeks.

What kind of results can I expect?

Eyelid surgery can dramatically improve the appearance of your eyes. Skin usually appears much firmer and tighter after your procedure. Results are typically long-lasting and many patients are able to preserve their results for several years.

Eyelid surgery doesn't completely stop the aging process. As you get older, it's normal for new lines and wrinkles to appear. But Dr. Clavijo-Alvarez can provide follow-up treatments to help keep your eyes looking young.

How much does eyelid surgery cost?

Surgery costs can vary. Your final price will depend upon which surgeon you chose, what procedure you select, and your geographic area. Blepharoplasty procedures in the Pittsburgh area typically range from $4,000–$6,000.
