A facelift is a surgical procedure performed by Dr. Julio Clavijo-Alvarez to address signs of aging such as deep wrinkles, sagging cheeks, jowls, and nasolabial grooves that cannot be corrected with non-surgical treatments. A facelift can rejuvenate your appearance dramatically and the results can last up to 10 years. Patients also have the choice of complementing a facelift with BOTOX® Cosmetic injections, dermal fillers, laser skin rejuvenation, and other non-surgical procedures at our practice.
This video will discuss details about facelifts.
A facelift is the enhancement of the face by refreshing the appearance. The process is more complex than just repositioning facial tissues with surgery. It also involves the improvement of the skin, volume replacement, especially at the cheek level, and softening of the wrinkles. Patients who are good candidates for the procedure are women and men with a descent of the cheeks, pronounced nasolabial grooves, noticeable jowls, and neck redundancy with a lack of the definition of the neckline.
My preferred way of doing the facelift is under general anesthesia. It usually takes between three to six hours. If longer than four hours, I prefer to keep the patients overnight for observation. The usual recovery time is one to two weeks.
Some important considerations in preparation for your procedure are to identify other areas of concern. Usually, the eyebrows and eyelids are part of the aging of the face. Does your neck bother you? Sometimes a neck lift will only address the excessive skin, bags and bands and neckline. However, it would not do anything to the midface or lower face.
Some frequently asked questions that many patients have are, "What is the best age for my facelift?" It depends on the patient's signs of aging. My personal approach is to optimize the skin, the lost volume and wrinkles first. If no more improvement is obtained, then a surgical intervention is the final step. "Would I have drains?" Yes, this is reserved for patients undergoing a neck lift.
"Is a quick lift or a mini facelift worth the money?" In my opinion, there are many more procedures that address minimal problems. It is better to optimize the face with lasers, Botox, and fillers, rather than starting with minimal procedures.
"How long do they last?" A full facelift should give you a good 10 years of rejuvenation. A quick lift usually is gone by one year, and a mini facelift, two to three years. "Would a neck lift address my jowls?" Not likely. This is better addressed with a facelift. "Would liposuction address my neck bands?" No. Liposuction only addresses the fat in the neck. The bands require surgery.
