What is the Recovery From Liposuction Like?
The recovery process after liposuction will vary depending on the extent of surgery performed. You can expect some bruising, swelling, and varying discomfort in the treatment area following your procedure. These effects may last a few weeks. Some patients choose to take a few days off of work and other obligations to rest and recover. You will not be able to exercise or perform other physically demanding activities for approximately one month after your treatment.
What Results Can I Expect from Liposuction?
The results from liposuction will be visible as soon as any post-operative swelling and bruising fade. In fact, some patients still notice their results despite these effects. Since fat cells are removed from the body with the lipo procedure, results can be long-lasting and even permanent. Patients are encouraged to practice healthy lifestyle habits to maintain their results.
How is Liposuction Performed?
The liposuction procedure is often performed with general anesthesia. This means that you will be asleep and entirely comfortable for the procedure. During the liposuction treatment, an incision will be made in the area of the body where fat is to be removed.
The size and location of these incisions will vary by patient, but Dr. Contogiannis makes every effort to keep incisions as small and as hidden as possible. Once incisions are made, a small metal tube, called a cannula, will be inserted into the pocket of fat. Then, a vacuum system removes this fat to produce the desired results.
How and where is the surgery done?
The Liposuction is done in an accredited AAAASF and state certified facility. It is done under general anesthesia. The duration of the procedure is about 1 to 4 hours depending on how many areas are addressed. It is done as an outpatient procedure if the fat deposits are removed amount to less than 5 liters. Otherwise, you should stay in the hospital for one day for monitoring.
Can I plan on doing the surgery 1 week prior to my 25th-year reunion?
Definitively NOT. Liposuction is a very well tolerated procedure. However, it will leave bruising and swelling that will be present for 1 or 2 weeks. Plan ahead if you are planning on this surgery.
Do I need to have my stitches removed?
No, when doing your liposuction, we will use absorbable stitches. Despite the use of ointments and massage, we will need to remove some of the remaining stitches that did not fall or disappear.
Differences between Laser liposuction; ultrasonic (Vaser – Lysonix) liposuction; traditional or conventional liposuction; tumescent liposuction?
Traditional liposuction is the infiltration of fluid (tumescent solution) followed by suction of fat with a cannula. In addition to the liposuction we can add other procedures to melt the fat and facilitate its extraction. This includes ultrasound (either Vaser or Lysonix), or laser (Smartlipo). Once the fat is melted, the traditional or conventional liposuction is used to remove the melted fat.
What complications could occur after Liposuction?
When doing liposuction, some of the possible complications related to the procedure are:
- Infection (<1%)
- Bleeding (<1%)
- Seroma formation (fluid collection within the tissues)
